Visual instrument

ENSCI – Les ateliers (2013)

For this subject, we had to pick a random software and to create a new kind of aestetic for it, then use what we created as a starting point to develop an object or a process.

This shows experiments I made during six monthes, playing with Processing.

The concern behind it is that lots of nowadays’ designers use these powerful tools at the end of their thinking process, threatening the essence of their ideas not to survive the super-computer system.

First, I want to see how you can interact with a given material, using sound to deform it. I start to think the screen in terms of space, and sound as movement. But at the moment it is still very random.

Then, I decide to use sound as a material to create images. I want to produce visuals you could read to get a mental image of what the noise has been. I give each tone a color, using the RVB spectrum. I test my idea in real situations, to see how it works in space.

My wish is to use this program to play video during live concerts or DJ sets. I imagine it in a big space, using direct perspective to give the impression that we are in movement.

The project is not finished yet, my next step is to design objects with very sensitive captors in it to translate the vibration you make when you touch it into sound waves, then into images in movement through the software.

“Classical object”

ENSCI – Les ateliers (2014)

The company we were working with already have several disposables products on the market (lighter, pen, razor) and they wanted to launch a new one for 2016.

They asked us to design their coming product so that it would be easy to use and cheap to build. The componants were already chosen, we needed to make them fit into the pocket and find the shape that would make it become a “classic”.

I went through the process along with the drawing and the study of possible gestures, I wanted it to be really evident in its understanding and easy to use even with one hand.
